Best Practice – I

Title of the Practice : Adarana                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

Goal: To provide snacks to the students in the afternoon sessions

The Context: Some of the students do not bring lunch box due to various reasons. They spend the afternoon sessions with empty stomach and are not able to concentrate on class work. Observing this, the Department of Zoology started this practice.

The Practice: An earthern Hundi is installed at the beginning of each academic year/semester. Students are asked to deposit coins when ever they are able to. Staff also deposit some money into the Hundi. At the end of the semester, or whenever required, the Hundi is opened. The money pooled up thus is utilized for providing snacks. Part of the money is utilized for purchase of books given to the needy. 

Evidence of Success: The students are able to withstand hunger and concentrate more on the classwork in the afternoon sessions. 

Problems encountered: Purchae of snacks as per students' wish is not possible.

Resources required: Met from the contributions of students and staff.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                     

Best Practice – II     

Title of the practice : Veekshana                                                                                                                                                                                                  

Goal: To Encourage students to go through popular writing of science in news papers

The Context: Students are not following news papers regularly.This practice is initiated toinculcate a habit of general reading and popularizing science,besides encouraging students for competitive exams.

The Practice: News paper clippings are colleted by students with the help of laboratory asst and faculty. Clippings are  posted to the notice board of the zoology department. Students watch these clippings, read and discuss among themselves, which has an inherent learning aspect.

Evidence of Success: Is reflected in students participation in quiz competitions, essay writing etc,besides a change in their attitude towards science.

Problems encountered: some of the studenets are making noteson the clippings themelves.

Resources required: Magazines need to be subscribed, for which funding is required.  At present, met by staff.
