National Service Scheme (NSS)

MRR Government Arts & Science Degree College NSS Unit

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a student volunteer organization operating at the undergraduate and 10+2 levels, spanning 396 universities across India with a membership of 3.8 million volunteers. It was officially launched on September 24, 1969, in commemoration of the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation.

The core principle of NSS is that it is student-driven, allowing both students and teachers to actively engage in community service and national development. Through participation in various social service activities, students gain valuable work experience, enhancing their skills and improving their employability in both self-employment and organizational roles.

Our college has one NSS unit offering 100 vacancies, functioning under Vikrama Simhapuri University, Nellore. Each year, the NSS unit organize various community service programs, including special camps, to foster social responsibility and holistic development among students.

Objectives of the National Service Scheme (NSS):

The primary objectives of the National Service Scheme (NSS) are:

  2. To foster self-awareness in relation to their role within the community.
  3. To identify community needs and challenges and actively participate in problem-solving.
  4. To cultivate a sense of social and civic responsibility among volunteers.
  5. To apply their knowledge and skills in finding practical solutions to individual and community issues.
  6. To develop teamwork, cooperation, and responsibility-sharing in group settings.
  7. To gain expertise in mobilizing community participation for social initiatives.
  8. To nurture leadership qualities and democratic values.
  9. To build the capacity to respond effectively to emergencies and natural disasters.
  10. To uphold national integration and social harmony through service and collaboration.

NSS Motto:

The motto of NSS, "Not Me, But You," embodies the spirit of democratic living and emphasizes the importance of selfless service. NSS nurtures students' personal growth by encouraging them to appreciate diverse perspectives and show compassion toward others.

This philosophy reflects the belief that an individual's well-being is closely linked to the welfare of society as a whole. Therefore, NSS volunteers are committed to working for the betterment of the community, fostering a sense of responsibility, empathy, and service in their endeavors.

NSS Logo and Badge:

The NSS logo is inspired by the Rath Wheel of the renowned Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) in Odisha, India. The red and blue colors in the logo symbolize the energy and enthusiasm of NSS volunteers in their commitment to nation-building and social service.

The wheel represents the cycle of creation, preservation, and transformation, signifying the dynamic nature of life across time and space. It embodies both continuity and change, reflecting NSS's relentless pursuit of social progress and development.

NSS Badge:

The NSS logo is prominently embossed on the NSS badge. The eight bars in the wheel symbolize the 24 hours of a day, representing the volunteers' dedication to selfless service at all times. The red color signifies the youthful energy, enthusiasm, and high spirit of NSS volunteers, while the navy blue color represents the vast cosmos, highlighting that NSS, though a small part of the universe, is committed to making a meaningful contribution to the welfare of humanity.

NSS Day:

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was officially launched on September 24, 1969, in honor of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation. As a tribute to this significant milestone, September 24 is observed annually as NSS Day, marked by various programs and activities that reflect the spirit of service and community engagement.
